San Carlo is a not for profit’ organization governed by a Board of Directors. San Carlo Homes for the Aged began its development in the mid 1970s and the beginning stage of the complicated was opened in 1979. Appointments are made to suit the families’ and residents’ needs but unfortunately there are times that the clinic or the specialist are unable to bear a choice of appointment without delaying a residents’ protection and treatment by a numerous time. All personal laundry is done on site and you are encouraged to provide clothing that can be safely machine washed and dried. San Carlo offers labeling of resident's clothing. We are capable to give protection in 5 specific areas designed to bear an environment suited to those living with dementia. Both these areas have access to sensory gardens and produce secure living spaces with private rooms and safe communal areas. Our staff have a commitment to the highest standards of care and this facility holds a 3 year accreditation with 100 percent compliance of the Aged Concern Standards. Staff are suited and experienced in providing individualized protection in a safe and cozy environment and in partnership with families and loved ones. Our care focuses on the resident as an individual person not merely as someone with dementia. We also foster our residents living with Dementia to participate on outings where they are able. The management and staff of San Carlo would like to welcome you and we sincerely hope that your time with us will be as comfortable as we can create for you. As a charitable organization with a specific focus on the Italian community, we achieve our vision by accepting and acknowledging specific cultural and spiritual needs of transient communities and tailoring the delivery of our services to face those needs. Staff we value our staff and their commitment to their development as care professionals. We encourage and foster them in their commitment to become more effective and accountable. The project has resulted in all residents using anti psychotic agents having the rationale for use explored and documented. Education is provided for families and staff. Staff saying they are able to identify non pharmaceutical interventions for behavior management and plausible adverse medication events.An education needs analysis also indicated a need for further information relating to dementia management. The Medication Advisory committee has offered guidance and direction into the project, reviewing documents created for both staff and family education and holding frequent education sessions for staff. Visiting pharmacists, in addition to attending meetings, remain to make recommendations relating to dosages and offer input into staff education sessions on a regular basis.

Services

San Carlo's Kiosk allows our residents some retail therapy. The Italian style menu itself is compiled from the residents’ personal choices and the dietitian’s advice. Alternatives to the menu are everlasting available and suggestions from residents and families are welcomed. Where residents require a special diet as needed by medical recommendations, then a suitable menu is prepared in conjunction with the resident and families. San Carlo has a smoke release environment and smoking is not permitted internal any building. Residents are permitted to smoke in designated areas, families are asked to discuss with staff the storage of cigarettes and lighters. We advise residents against bringing valuable items, jewellery or keeping large amounts of cash. Residents have access to their own individually locked drawer and we can yield brief term storage for insignificant items or cash. Family and After of Kin may visit their loved one throughout the day. We ask that you inform the Nurse in Charge should you wish to visit after hours i.e. behind dark, as the doors lock to the security setting in the evenings thereby affording residents and staff extra safety. After hours you must ring the bell and wait for the nurse to unfold the door. Children visiting residents must be supervised by their parents or responsible mature at all times. Visiting hairdressers are available to residents and services are paid for on an individual basis. If your Doctor is unable to continue your care subsequent admission, you are free to choose another Doctor. The valor Clinic Doctors have worked with us at San Carlo for many years and therefore have extensive experience in aged. San Carlo has a stuffed time Gerontological Nurse Practitioner who works in conjunction with the visiting doctors and who services are available to all residents. The staff will confer with families to assist with access to services including dentist, podiatrist, dietitians and speech pathologists. On admission all medications are reviewed by the GP and senior clinical staff at San Carlo. Medication must be stored by San Carlo and not kept in the resident’s room unless the resident has been assessed by the GP and clinical Coordinator as being capable to self administer. Families are reminded not to supply residents with any medication unless discussed with their doctor. San Carlo has a call bell system within the units that is activated by staff or residents requiring crucial or non crucial assistance. San Carlo has a pliable fire safety system in deposit that will minimize the risk of a fire emergency. The buildings have compliant fire detection systems and sprinklers are installed throughout the facility. Staff are trained and aware of their roles and responsibilities in an emergency situation.
